Who We Are

Our History

The Chong Family arrived in the United States in the mid to late 20th century as refugees, escaping regional conflict in Asia and seeking a better life. In pursuit of the American dream, our family worked various jobs, such as doormen and dishwashers, before pursuing entrepreneurial dreams in fashion, jewelry, and real estate. We were fortunate to achieve what we considered the American dream, experiencing a period of peace and prosperity.

While we experienced anti-Asian hate and intolerance towards people with mental illnesses, we found strength in our family and community, knowing that together we could survive and thrive. However, on Saturday, March 23, 2024, our family was shaken to its core. Susan Chong—a beloved aunt, sister, and daughter—was stabbed in her home located on April Valley Court in Houston, Texas. Andrew Chong—an uncle, brother, and son—found Susan shortly after the incident and called for an ambulance. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The following weeks were nerve-racking as we stayed by her bedside, uncertain if she would recover. Fortunately, thanks to the dedicated doctors, Susan recovered. We were fortunate to have the time and resources to care for her after her discharge from critical care and to move her to a new home closer to the rest of our family.

Susan has a mental illness that affects her daily life and can make those around her uncomfortable. However, we believe that violence is never the solution; a bad day does not warrant a violent response. Awareness, understanding, and tolerance are at the heart of caring for those with mental illnesses and improving mental health.

This incident shocked our family deeply. Committed to making a difference, we founded the April Valley Foundation to transform the trauma experienced on April Valley Court into a catalyst for positive change. While we were able to swiftly move Susan to a safer and more comfortable environment, we recognize that many families do not have the same resources. We are committed to changing that. We are here to make a difference, and we will create change.
